The Human Rights and Democracy Institute at AGS serves as a global hub for advancing human rights education, policy reform, and social justice leadership. With a strong focus on both the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa, the institute addresses the diverse yet interconnected challenges faced by these regions—ranging from civil liberties and racial justice issues in the US to governance reform, economic rights, and social equity concerns across Sub-Saharan Africa. The institute is committed to fostering a new generation of human rights advocates equipped to address systemic injustices and promote equitable governance. It supports professionals in public interest law, governance, and human rights through advanced research initiatives, legal training, and leadership development programs. The curriculum integrates global best practices with region-specific approaches, enabling participants to develop contextually relevant strategies for driving social impact. With an emphasis on cross-regional collaboration, the institute facilitates partnerships between US-based organizations and African institutions to promote knowledge exchange, capacity building, and joint research efforts. Participants gain exposure to global human rights frameworks while engaging in localized case studies that address issues such as electoral justice, gender equality, and the protection of marginalized communities.
